For about six weeks, NDLON & the IYC has been holding Chant Down the Walls concert series in front of the Metropolitan Detention Center in Downtown LA. More than 500 people have accompanied us throughout these events. Likewise, the serenades have brought us closer to the relatives of detainees that come to greet their loved ones from outside the building.

One Monday, Omar Leon, the lead singer of Los Jornaleros del Norte, had the opportunity to speak with a woman that had gone to celebrate her husband’s birthday. She had flowers and balloons and from outside she would tell him she loved him using signs.

Moved by the situation and the conversation, Omar wrote “Serenata a un indocumentado,” (Serenate to an undocumented immigrant). We were then able to record the song with the beautiful voice of Loyda Alvarado and we are thrilled to share it with all of you.

We know that this Friday there will be a series of events called Chant Down the Walls in different parts of the country and we would like this song to be used.

Asómate a la ventana (Look out the window)
Te traje una serenata (I brought you a serenade)
Aunque estés encarcelado (Although you are imprisoned)
Mira te canta quien te ama (The one who loves you is singing)
Por tí me juego la vida (I gamble my life for you)
Por liberarte, me muero en la raya (To liberate you I’d die at the front)

Hay que leyes tan injustas (Such unjust laws)
Que buscan el separarnos (That seek to separate us)
Nos juzgan de criminales (They judge us as criminals)
Por ser indocumentados (For being undocumented)
No saben que nuestras manos (Don’t they know that our hands)
A ellos los tienen tragando (Are the ones that feed them)

A donde vayas te sigo (Wherever you go I would follow you)
Si te deportan también (Even if they deport you)
A la chingada este Norte (To hell with this North)
Porque sin tí, ya pa’ qué (What’s the point without you?)

Mis hijos desconsolados (My bereaved children)
Me preguntan por su padre (Ask me for their father)
Y yo no puedo mentirles (And I cannot lie to them)
La situación es muy grave (The situation is very serious)
Usted señor Presidente (You, Mr. President)
Huérfanos quiere dejarlos (want to leave them as orphans)

A donde vayas te sigo (Wherever you go I would follow you)
Si te deportan también (Even if they deport you)
A la chingada este norte (To hell with this North)
Porque sin tí ya pa’ qué (What’s the point without you?)
